POST SCHOOLING

After school he commenced a law degree at The University of Sydney but spent the bulk of his working life as a grazier on family properties in Queensland and finally in the Marulan district of NSW.

The property at Marulan, known as ‘Johnniefelds’ was where William and his first wife, Gillian, settled and built their home in 1968. They had two daughters and one son, Geoffrey who died just before his third birthday. Molly is dedicated to the memory of Geoffrey and his mother.

JOHNNIEFELDS

William and his second wife, Rachel, further developed the garden to the point at which it became a feature open to the public through the Open Garden Scheme. They also ran Angus cattle on Johnniefelds and had one daughter, Eleanor.

Initially undeveloped, the Johnniefelds property and the lovely 35-hectare lake was turned into one of very high standard in the district. The lake was named Lake Donald, after Gillian’s father.

Using a base herd of mixed breeds, he bred the first Charolais herd in Australia known as Joanama Charolais Stud.

THE LATER YEARS

In 2011 William sold all his rural interests to settle in Bowral where today he enjoys an amateur acting and speaking career as well as writing poetry, short plays and speeches. He wrote his first novel, Molly, in 2017 and his second, Claypan, in 2019.
